The Movie Shack Finds a New Home at Bexley Central Library

There’s great news for Bexleyheath’s gaming and creative community, as much-loved activities previously hosted by The Movie Shack are set to continue at Bexley Central Library.

Following the closure of The Movie Shack’s Bexleyheath shop on 7 August, Bexley Libraries has stepped in to help ensure that the community built around its popular gaming and creative sessions can continue to meet, play and make new friendships.

The new partnership means residents will once again be able to enjoy favourites including Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering card game sessions, alongside a variety of arts and crafts activities.

More Than Just Games

Over the years, The Movie Shack’s activities have developed into much more than opportunities to play games or get creative. They have created a welcoming and inclusive environment where people can meet others with similar interests, make friends and feel part of their local community.

The sessions have been particularly valued by neurodiverse young people and adults, as well as people experiencing mental health challenges, providing a friendly space in which everyone can feel welcome.

Importantly, the familiar faces behind the activities aren’t disappearing either. The sessions will continue to be led by The Movie Shack’s experienced staff and volunteers, welcoming existing members as well as anyone who would like to come along for the first time.

A New Chapter at Bexley Central Library 📚🎲

The move to Bexley Central Library marks an exciting new chapter for the clubs.

Councillor Brian Bishop, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, welcomed the partnership, highlighting the important role the sessions play in helping residents meet people with shared interests, build their confidence and feel part of a welcoming community.

Libraries are already important spaces for people to connect, learn and take part in activities, making Bexley Central Library a fitting new home for the programme.

And there’s more to look forward to. As part of the partnership, The Movie Shack will introduce additional free activities during future school holidays and at other points throughout the year, giving even more local residents the opportunity to get involved.

Keeping the Community Together 💖

While saying goodbye to The Movie Shack’s physical shop is undoubtedly sad for its team and loyal customers, Danny and Lorraine from The Movie Shack have said they are thrilled that the activities and community surrounding them will live on.

For many people, friendships have grown around the gaming tables and creative sessions – and this partnership means those connections can continue to flourish in the heart of Bexleyheath.
